Afro-Latino Festival NYC 2022
The festival features talks, music, food and artisanal crafts. This year’s theme is “Affirm, Educate & Celebrate.”
Honoree Beatriz Nascimento
Bethania Nascimento talks on the legacy of Beatriz Nascimento (1942-1995), an academic Brazilian activist in the Black Movement of Brazil, who will be honored posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award. 🇧🇷
Nascimento is remembered for her work in gaining international recognition for Afro-Latina women. We have noticed in our work that women are the guardians of culture. Even when men take the stage, it is women who make it happen.
Brazil has the world’s largest African Diaspora. Officially there is no racism in Brazil, but in practice complaining about it gets you in trouble with the government. Cuba has the same problem. It’s a classic catch-22 where you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Nascimento was a courageous woman. If you honestly study the Colonial Period, you quickly learn how evil and violence it was and how much it is whitewashed in popular culture. The Colonial Period was World War Zero, the Europeans against everyone, including each other. People of color suffered horribly and resisted endlessly, but many of us are only just starting to learn about that.
Protesting on the streets is one thing, but getting a masters degree and publishing academic papers is another thing that becomes harder to ignore. A lesson we draw from Nascimento is to get an education. It can change your life more than just about anything else.
Getting an education isn’t easy, but nothing worthwhile is easy. New York City is a great place to get an education.
