Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is not a ballet company, but performs at the level of NYC’s famed ballet companies in every way. Many Ailey choreographies and performances have a powerful spiritual dimension derived from the African American experience.

Season highlights include the World Premiere of Kyle Abraham’s “Are You in Your Feelings?,” a Company Premiere of Twyla Tharp’s “Roy’s Joys” (1997), and a new production of Ailey’s “Survivors.” There are also New York City Center Premieres of Paul Taylor’s “Duet” and Jamar Roberts’ “In a Sentimental Mood.” Artistic Director Robert Battle
Kyle Abraham’s “Are You in Your Feelings?” celebrates Black culture and music with a “mixtape” of soul, hip-hop and R&B.
The new production of Ailey’s “Survivors” (1986) pays tribute to the courage of South Africa’s Nelson and Winnie Mandela to a soundtrack of Max Roach’s drumming and Abbey Lincoln’s vocals. It has not been performed since 1988.
Jamar Roberts’ “In a Sentimental Mood” explores love and desire in a couple’s domestic life. It’s set to a Duke Ellington composition and four jazz standards arranged by Rafiq Bhatia.
The program Ailey & Ellington showcases four Ailey ballets set to Ellington including “Night Creature,” “Reflections in D,” “Pas de Duke,” and “The River.” Other Ailey classics include “Cry,” “Memoria” and “Revelations.”
Family Matinee performances are a great way to introduce little ones to dance. Associate Artistic Director Matthew Rushing, one of the great American male dancers does a Q&A session on Saturday, December 10.
