Binomio de Oro is one of Colombia’s most famous vallenato groups. It was founded in 1976 by singer Rafael Orozco and accordionist Israel Romero.
Vallenato is a Colombian folk music that is similar to cumbia from the Caribbean coast. Vallenato has more Indigenous influences from the mountains.

Binomio de Oro de América
The band was founded in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla by singer Rafael Orozco Maestre (1954-1992) and accordionist Israel Romero in 1976. Orozco was murdered, reportedly because some gangster’s wife or girlfriend had a crush on him. We hope those days are behind us.
At the Carnaval de Barranquilla, the group won the prestigious Congo de Oro award seven times in 1978, 1987, 1988, 1989-1990, 1991, 1992 and 1996. The band is also popular in Venezuela.
Israel Romero kept the band together and keeps refreshing it with young talent. Over the years, the group has spun off so many prominent vallenato musicians that its nickname is “The University of Vallenato.”
