Disobedience, the latest movie by hot Academy Award-winning Argentine – Chilean director Sebastián Lelio (Gloria, A Fantastic Woman) features strong performances by Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola.
Lelio continues exploring the intimate lives of people in the role of outsiders. This movie is about being true to yourself while staying true to your religion. That’s always complicated.
A woman returns to the community that shunned her for her attraction to a childhood friend. Once back, their passions reignite as they explore the boundaries of faith and sexuality.
The Orthodox Jewish LGBTQ story will resonate with many New Yorkers.
The screenplay was written by Sebastián Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. It is based on the novel by Naomi Alderman.
The film stars:
- Rachel Weisz as Ronit Krushka
- Rachel McAdams as Esti Kuperman, Dovid’s wife
- Alessandro Nivola as Rabbi Dovid Kuperman, Esti’s husband
Disobedience premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017.
It screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018.
The film is a Bleecker Street release.
Lelio was born in Argentina in 1974, but raised in Chile. He graduated from La Escuela de Cine de Chile (Film School of Chile).
The director started out making shorts. He then made three feature films that did well on the film festival circuit.
Gloria (2013), about a sixty-year-old office worker who finds that being single again isn’t easy, though it can be rewarding, was Lelio’s breakthrough movie.
A Fantastic Woman
A Fantastic Woman just won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Marina is a waitress and singer who is planning a future with her older boyfriend Orlando. When he dies suddenly after a night of celebration together, she is confronted in mourning by his family and by a society that wants to strip her of her identity.
Disobedience is Lelio’s first English-language film. To draw outstanding performances of characters with this complexity in another language is a major achievement. You definitely want to see what Lelio is creating next.
