Michelle Dorrance

Dorrance is based in New York. To become a master in the arts, you usually have to train with one. She was mentored by Gene Medler of the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble, and studied with many masters of the previous generation.

She is so accomplished that you wonder how she fits it all into one lifetime. Dorrance was a member of “Stomp,” the Off-Broadway show that is all percussion. She worked on the “Charlie’s Angel’s/Chasing the Bird” movie and Ayodele Casel’s “Diary of a Tap Dancer.”

Michelle has done commissions for the Martha Graham Dance Company, Vail Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre and New York City Center. She choreographed Broadway’s “Flying Over Sunset” at the Lincoln Center Theater in 2021.

Dorrance is a 2018 Doris Duke Artist, 2017 Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow, and 2015 MacArthur Fellow. @mashdeez
