En el nombre de Salomé

En el Nombre de Salomé at Repertorio Español is a 2017 play based on the Dominican poet & women’s education activist Salomé Ureña.

The Dominican Republic is known for the strength and energy of its women. Salomé Ureña was one of the founding mothers of women’s rights in the DR.

En el nombre de Salomé is Dominicana

The play is written by Marco Antonio Rodríguez and directed by José Zayas. It is based on the Julia Alvarez novel In the Name of Salomé (2000).

Julia Alvarez is a Dominican New Yorker who is most famous for In the Time of the Butterflies, her story of the three Mirabal sisters who were murdered for resisting the Trujillo dictatorship.

En el nombre de Salomé is actually the story of Ureña’s daughter Camila Henriquez Ureña who taught in pre-revolutionary Cuba. As she is about to retire from teaching Spanish at Vassar College, a famed women’s university in Poughkeepsie, New York, Camila begins sorting her family papers. Through them she gets to know her legendary mother who died when Camila was only three.

Camila retires to Cuba where the revolution poses a choice: to retire quietly or pick up her mother’s mantle to guide a new generation of young women towards the future.

Salomé Ureña was a Heroine of Women’s Rights

Salomé Ureña de Henríquez was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on October 21, 1850. In that time and place, women were expected to follow very traditional roles.

Ureña’s father was a writer who educated her. Ureña had natural talent. She published her first work when she was just 17. After marrying Ureña opened “Instituto de Señoritas,” the Dominican Republic’s first school of higher education for women. The Instituto produced graduates who furthered women’s causes in the Dominican Republic.

Ms. Ureña died in Santo Domingo in 1897 at age 46. All of her children became respected intellectuals. Her husband Dr. Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal was for a short time the president of the Dominican Republic.
