Their stories have been kind of left to the side, but NYC’s Puerto Rican community was very much part of Stonewall. The movement led Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) to become an organizer, and there were others whose names we don’t know. FUERZAfest is their legacy.
NYC’s LGBTQ+ community got really organized during the Stonewall years and the AIDS years. It made more progress, faster than any other social group in American history. Things got better for a while, but we seem to be in a two steps forward, one step backwards moment. Now is the time to get organized again because our communities are under assault again.
