Handel’s “Messiah” is a Christmas tradition

Handel’s Messiah is one of the most popular choral works in European music. It is a Christmas tradition in the United States and an Easter tradition elsewhere in the world.

In case you wonder why we cover sacred music by a German composer, it’s because Christmas is the world’s most popular Latin holiday.

New York Philharmonic Messiah

Tuesday-Thursday, December 17-19, 2019 ~ Jane Glover conducts the orchestra, and Joe Miller directs the Westminster Symphonic Choir at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center at 7:30pm

Trinity Church Messiah

This is the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra.

One of the first performances in the United States was here in 1770. In 2018, the New York Times said this is New York City’s most touching Messiah.

Sunday, December 22, 2019 at 3pm

Due to renovations at Trinity Church, this year’s concert is at St. Paul’s Chapel just up Broadway.

Frideric Handel

George Frideric Handel (German, 1685 – 1759) was a German Baroque composer. Baroque music is Italian in character. The church was a major inspiration.

Handel’s English-language choral work was written in 1741. It premiered in Dublin, Ireland in 1742.

New York Philharmonic

The New York Philharmonic performs Handel’s Messiah at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center, Tuesday – Thursday and Saturday, December 12 – 16 at 7:30 pm, with a morning matinee Friday, December 15 at 11 am.

Trinity Church
