Family is the heart of Latin culture, and Latin men are often close to their mothers, so Mother’s Day is a very important day.
Romanians are not Hispanic, but are Latin from Roman times.
Puerto Rico and many other Hispanic countries still celebrate on the traditional Spanish Mother’s Day – even if official Mother’s Day is some other date. In Puerto Rico, beaches and parks are full of families loving their moms – even though Puerto Rico’s official Mother’s Day is the same as the U.S.
Mother’s Day Traditions
Flowers, sweets, breakfast in bed, a spa visit, a hug: family traditions are pretty similar around the world because we are all human. The card-giving tradition is not so popular in Europe. It’s more of an American thing.
As a parent, the best gifts are made by your own hand and just time spent together. We don’t need to commercialize it.
Iberian Origins
In Spain and Portugal, Mother’s Day was traditionally celebrated on the Catholic Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. That’s interesting because the Feast of the Immaculate Conception basically acknowledges the divinity of women. It was requested by the people and finally the Church accepted it. So that was a big deal.
The celebration was moved to its current date in the 1960s to celebrate the secular celebration from the religious one.
It’s also celebrated in Cape Verde, the island chain off of West Africa that had a Portuguese colonial history.
Romanian Celebrations
Some Romanian families celebrate Mother’s Day on March 8, but the official celebration is the first Sunday in May. Romanians celebrate Father’s Day on the next Sunday. That’s kind of cool.
In Earthly Terms
It’s spring and Mother Earth is birthing the new growing season. Humans are part of Earth so it’s a natural correlation between Mother Earth and Mother.
