Celebrate India Independence Day (from the United Kingdom) on August 15, 1947. It was the day when the Indian Independence Act of 1947 became law.
Are Indian-Americans Latin?
Indian Americans are generally not Latin. But if you live in the Caribbean, you know we are blended together.
Workers came from India to the former British colonies after abolition.
Trinidad has a plurality (the most people, but not a majority) of Indo-Trinidadians. A “Dougla” is a person of African East Indian descent. Legendary Trinidadian American dancer Geoffrey Holder choreographed a famous classical ballet “Dougla.” It is Dance Theatre of Harlem’s signature ballet.
Anyway, we get to celebrate multiple traditions. How cool is that? And that’s where all that good curry and South Asian-inspired Caribbean cuisine comes from. You know that’s good.
And now Kamala Harris is going to be the first Black, South Asian and Woman vice president. She is Jamaican Indian American. That’s pretty exciting too.
So some Indian Americans are Latin, and we are all human.
