45th International Emmy Awards

The 45th International Emmy Awards are at the New York Hilton Midtown on Monday, November 20, 2017. Iranian-American comedian and actor Maz Jobrani (Axis of Evil, Immigrant) hosts.

I’m super excited to host the International Emmys. Although given our new immigration laws I’m not sure how many nominees will actually make it.

~ Maz Jobrani ~

Andy Kaplan, President, Sony Pictures Television Networks will chair this year’s awards.

Nominees

2017 International Emmy® Nominees will be announced in late September.

News

2017 News nominees with a Latin connection are:

Jornal Nacional – The Ryan Lochte Scandal
Globo Comunicação e Participações S.A.
Brazil

A dream team of swimmers were robbed at gunpoint during the Olympics. The tale fit Rio’s violent reputation and gained worldwide attention. Jornal Nacional’s investigative journalists exposed the lie concocted by Ryan Lochte and discovered the real story. Lochte later confessed and apologized in an exclusive interview in Globo’s New York studios.

Current Affairs

2017 Current Affairs nominees with a Latin connection are:

Globo Repórter – Art as Passport
Globo Comunicação e Participações S.A.
Brazil

In a country with so much inequality, the opportunity to learn art can transform lives. Young people in social projects in the favelas find new prospects for their families. Some have already started promising careers abroad, such as ballerina Ingrid Silva and trombonist Aline Alcantara.

Uppdrag granskning: Panamadokumenten (Mission Investigate: The Panama Papers)
SVT / ICIJ / Syddeutsche Zeitung / Reykjavik Media / Yle / DR / NDR / RUV / Première Lignes France
Sweden

The Panama Papers has become a milestone in the international fight against tax evasion and money-laundering. 400 journalists worked with the leak, including Sven Bergman and Joachim Dyfvermark. Their interview with the Icelandic Prime Minister about his offshore business was broadcast worldwide.

Special Awards

Founders Award

Kevin Spacey will receive the 2017 International Emmy® Founders Award.

Grupo Televisa Chairman to Receive Directorate Award

Emilio Azcárraga Jean, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Grupo Televisa, the world’s largest Spanish-language content provider and Mexico’s largest broadcaster and pay television provider, will receive the 2017 International Emmy® Directorate Award.

[NOTE] Mexico, not Spain, is the world capital of Spanish-language media. The United States is #2.

Emilio Azcárraga Jean said: “Television dissolved the borders between the US and Mexico a long time ago. Technology has allowed us to connect, to share our values and to get to know each other better as friends, partners and neighbors. Our countries are more than public policies that come and go–history brings us together and geography unites us. This recognition is proof that if we continue working to grow together, we can develop a promising shared future. On behalf of Televisa and the Spanish-speaking world that we serve, I thank the Academy for this award.”
