Carlos Henriquez is a great teacher. He taught us clave at a similar concert years ago. Now we live in clave, work in clave, and love in clave. Thanks Jazz at Lincoln Center!

We wonder why Haiti, the heart of African Diaspora culture in the Caribbean and North America is left out of this journey. Jazz is from New Orleans, and in 1810, half of New Orleans was Haitian Diaspora.

Artists

Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis built the world’s leading African American jazz institution through his musicianship, determination, and ability to tell jazz stories. His appearances on PBS made Marsalis a jazz spokesperson.

Carlos Henriquez

Marsalis chose Carlos Henriquez as his bass player for his own bands and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Puerto Rican New Yorker from The Bronx played with many salsa legends, and was mentored by Tito Puente.

Henriquez is “one of New York City’s most important Latin jazz musicians” (New York Latin Culture Magazine), because like his mentor, Carlos is completely fluid in both straight-ahead jazz and clave-based Latin jazz.
