Joyce Ballet Festival Unites the Ballet World in the Hands of Calvin Royal III

Joyce Ballet Festival is an August celebration of ballet, the science of dance. It brings together some of the world’s best ballet dancers and choreographers. It’s a special treat to see so many artists of this calibre in an intimate theater. It’s like having front-row seats to the stars of ballet.

For the Joyce Ballet Festival 2024 “UNITE,” American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Calvin Royal III co-produces a multicultural festival of ballet with dancers from nine companies, on five continents, spanning four generations; at the Joyce Theater in Chelsea, Manhattan; from Tuesday-Sunday, August 13-18, 2024, with a curtain chat on Wednesday, and a family matinee on Saturday. From $27. 🇺🇸 🇧🇷 🇦🇷 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 🇸🇳 🇰🇷 🇪🇸

Dancers from American Ballet Theatre, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Boston Ballet, and more perform works by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, George Balanchine, Angelin Preljocaj, and works by the dancers themselves, including a Calvin Royal III solo.

This Ballet Festival is important because ballet needs to both respect tradition while constantly renewing itself. Otherwise, the ballet audience will be asleep in the theater or dead. ABT dancers give to the next generation, but we have noticed that Calvin Royal III gives a lot. It’s a little ironic that a person of color, a community that was long excluded from ballet, is leading the dance into the future.

Calvin gets it. Our best future is not separate, it is together. That’s why we UNITE!
