Latin Alternative Music
Latin alternative music grew out of Argentine rock (Rock Nacional) of the late 1960s and early 70s. Before then Latin bands mostly played popular rock tunes with lyrics translated into Spanish.
Méxican artists were making some progress in the United States, but it was Argentine bands like Los Gatos (Litto Nebbia), Arco Iris (Gustavo Santaolalla), Almendra (Luis Alberto Spinetta), with Sui Generis and Serú Girán (Charly Garcia) that made rock en español popular across Latin America. The artists were processing the social revolutions of the 1960s/70s, and speaking out against the dictatorships in their countries in coded language to avoid censorship. They wrote many Spanish rock anthems that people all over Latin America can sing along with today.
Most of these artists lost themselves to the excesses of rock ‘n roll, but Gustavo Santaolalla moved to Los Angeles and as a producer helped develop what we now call Latin Alternative Music. Santaolalla’s current band is Bajofondo. Santaolalla won back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Original Score for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain and 2006’s Babel and is composing music for video games.
Today’s Latin Alternative Music blends rock and rap. If you want to hear what is happening now, the LAMC is a great place to do it.
