We love Portuguese people and culture, but Portugal was a colonizer. Even worse, Portugal started and ran much of the Atlantic slave trade. All the Portuguese colonizers cared about was gold and collecting souls like Facebook likes. Never forget that most of those beautiful buildings and churches in Lisbon and across the old Portuguese Empire were paid for with lots of Indigenous and African blood. Never forget.

Portugal Day and the Fado Festival are New York City’s big Portuguese celebrations.

There is a Portuguese community in Astoria, Queens, but the big one is in the Ironbound District of Newark, New Jersey. There is a Luso-American Social Club in Caroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
Portuguese Culture
Portugal is a seafaring nation. Fado is the music of “saudade”, the terrible longing that sailors and their loved ones feel when they are far away from each other. Portuguese speakers say the full meaning of the word cannot be translated, but if you are far from home, you know what it means. Fado is medicine for saudade.
