Costa Rican NYC is a mix of Indigenous, Spanish and African cultures. ¡Vamos Ticos!

Indigenous Mesoamerican and Andean cultures overlapped in Costa Rica. Spanish colonizers enslaved Indigenous and African peoples from 1522 to 1821. Human slavery was abolished in 1823. Most of today’s Afro-Costa Ricans are a Jamaican diaspora.

Costa Rican Festivals

Juan Santamaría Day on April 11 is a Costa Rican holiday that commemorates the death of the national hero in 1856. His bravery led to the defeat of a private colonizer army from the United States. Santamaría was an army drummer who literally set the enemy camp on fire!

He has been a Costa Rican nationalist symbol since the late 1800s. He is popular because he was a regular person who became a national hero.

Santamaría was half Black, though his iconic image has been whitened. That was the way of thinking at the time, and remains standard practice across Latin America.
