Mariah Carey is a New York Venezuelan Pop singer-songwriter, one of the great voices of her generation, and a major influence on the singers who followed. She is perhaps most famous for her holiday anthem, “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

Mariah Carey is an Afro-Venezuelan, Irish, American. She is gifted with a wide-ranging voice that can sing in very high registers. Carey is known for singing several notes on one syllable. This “melisma” is a North African tradition that came to the Americas through the blues.

Mariah went from working in a restaurant to stardom in 1988 when Columbia Records chief Tommy Mottola listened to her demo tape. The first four singles from her first self-titled album reached number one. She won “Best New Artist” and “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” for “Vision of Love;” at the 1991 Grammys.

Carey’s 1994 “Merry Christmas” album with “All I Want for Christmas is You” is the best-selling Christmas album of all time.
