New Museum of Contemporary Art

The New Museum is Manhattan’s only museum dedicated solely to contemporary art. The Museum transformed the Bowery from a homeless destination into a cultural destination.

The New Museum Story

The museum was founded in 1977 by art historian, critic, and curator Marcia Tucker.

The museum moved to its current building in 2007. This led to a revitalization of the entire neighborhood. The Bowery used to be Skid Row, a neighborhood for alcoholics and addicts.

CBGBs, the famous Punk Rock club was just down the street in this once abandoned part of Manhattan. Punkers wouldn’t recognize the street now.
