August 28, 2022 by New York Latin Culture Magazine

New York Carnival J'ouvert (Roger Mcclean/Dreamstime)

New York Carnival J’ouvert 2022 Paintopia is New York Carnival’s official J’ouvert party.

J’ouvert

J’ouvert is a Carnival daybreak celebration, a Caribbean Creole tradition. Though Trinidad speaks English, Trinidad Carnival traditions developed on French Haitian plantations in Trinidad after abolition. Hence the French word “j’ouvert” or daybreak.
