About New York City Opera
New York City Opera was founded at New York City Center in 1943. Legendary New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia called it “the people’s opera” because like New York City Center, its mission was to present culture to all New Yorkers at a reasonable price.
New Yorkers used to line up in the streets for opera. The Company helped launch the careers of many famous opera stars.
It moved to Lincoln Center in 1966, but left in 2011 which led to a hiatus from 2013 to 2016. The Company continues to entertain New Yorkers. It’s a small company now, but that gives it the freedom to do some really unique opera. After all, it’s the people’s opera.
