The New York Latino Film Festival is the leading urban Latino film festival in the United States.
A current of thought that is has been raising its head in our community this week is that we need to normalize Latino voices and other “other” voices in media and in U.S. American life.
Now is not the time to hide. We have always been here, have always contributed and have even more to contribute. We are all citizens of El Paso now.

New York Latino Film Festival 2019
The 2019 New York Latino Film Festival is at the AMC Empire 25 in Hell’s Kitchen and other venues in New York City, Monday through Sunday, August 12-18, 2019.
In addition to narrative features, documentaries and shorts, this year’s festival includes FUTURO, a conference of social media influencers, an outdoor screening of Poetic Justice (1993) in tribute to John Singleton, the director of Boyz n the Hood (1991) who was the first Black director nominated for an Oscar.
AMC Empire 25 is the main venue, but there are also screenings at Julia de Burgos Performance & Arts Center in El Barrio East Harlem and Saint Nicholas Park in Harlem.
In addition to work by Latinos in the U.S., the Festival represents the diversity of what it is to be Latino today with films with African, Argentine, Brazilian, Costa Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Ecuadorian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Spanish roots.
Opening Night ~ Princess of the Row
Wednesday, August 14, 2019 ~ The Festival opens with the New York premiere of Van Maximilian Carlson’s Princess of the Row (2019) at AMC Empire 25 at 7:30pm, $22. A VIP option includes a pre-screening cocktail for $50.
Unflinching and emotional, Princess of the Row is the inspiring tale of a runaway foster child who will stop at nothing to live with the only family she knows: her father a homeless, mentally ill-veteran fighting to survive on the streets of LA’s skid row.
Closing Night ~ El Proyeccionista
Sunday, August 17, 2019 ~ The Festival closes with the New York Premiere of Dominican director José Maria Cabral’s El Proyeccionista (2019), $16. A VIP option includes a pre-screening cocktail for $25.
All his life, Eliseo has brought the magic of movies to the small rural towns in the Dominican Republic countryside via his traveling cinema caravan. When he’s not on the road or putting on a show, Eliseo is entranced by old film reels that he never shows anyone: images of a beautiful young woman he only knows through a projected film reel.
One fateful night, however, the reels are damaged. Eliseo loses the only thing he felt connected to – the projected image of the woman he loves so much and is plunged into a search for her real identity. Accompanied by a free-spirited girl on a cinema journey that takes him to some of the most remote and poorest areas of the Dominican Republic, Eliseo will learn that hope should never be lost and blood is thicker than water in more ways than one.
