NYC J’ouvert 2022 is Back in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

NYC J’ouvert 2022 is a daybreak celebration on the morning of Carnival Day where celebrants spray water, foam, and paint or colored powders on each other. It’s really fun, but please read on.

J’ouvert

J’ouvert is a Caribbean Creole tradition. Though Trinidad speaks English, Trinidad Carnival traditions developed on French Haitian plantations in Trinidad after abolition. Hence the French word “j’ouvert” or daybreak.

Many traditional cultures start festival celebrations on the night before. Traditional J’ouvert in Crown Heights starts at midnight, but there have been serious problems during the night in recent years. We don’t recommend it, unless you are from the community. At least wait for the light.

New York Carnival J’ouvert 2022 Paintopia is a safe and sane alternative where we can celebrate our traditions in a secure environment on the Brooklyn Museum Grounds.

New York Mayor Adams says J’ouvert is back. This year’s theme is “Rejuvenate: Breaking the Chain and Embracing the Movement.”

The NYC J’ouvert 2022 daybreak festival is on Monday, September 5, 2022 from 6 – 11am. 🇹🇹

Expect a heavy NYPD presence. Please be safe and sane. Trouble hurts the entire community. We just want to have fun. That’s what J’ouvert and Carnival are all about.
