New York City Hall is the ceremonial home of the Mayor’s Office, Public Advocate, New York City Council and city agencies.


Mayor’s Office

The Mayor is sort of the president of New York City.

Bill de Blasio is mayor through 2021.


Public Advocate

The Public Advocate’s acts as a city watchdog to ensure that city government serves New Yorkers instead of themselves.

New York City Agencies

There are many agencies, but these are relevant to culture:

  • NYC Department of Cultural Affairs
  • NYC Department of Education
  • NYC Department of Parks & Recreation
  • NYC Department of Small Business Services
  • NYC Media oversees public broadcasting in NYC
  • Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment (MOME)

Some agencies that serve the city are indirectly part of the city government.

  • NYC Economic Development Corporation is a nonprofit corporation that promotes economic growth and especially real estate development.
  • NYC & Company is New York City’s official marketing and tourism agency.
