Nublu Jazz Club (Geoff Goldswain/Adobe)

Nublu is a music collective with a pair of East Village world Jazz clubs. It has spawned a label with a number of bands and its own unique Nublu sound.

It is a late night club. Performances usually start around midnight.

The open door policy is cool. If you don’t get in, the club is full.

Home of the “Nublu Sound”

Ilhan is a saxophone player and composer originally from Turkey. His wife is Brazilian. Ilhan originally created a jamming space in 2002. It became a music collective and a nightclub. It has now expanded into two spaces.

It’s in the far East of the East Village so the vibe is funky. The marquee of Nublu Classic is a blue lightbulb. The door policy is that you get in unless the club is full. The stage is at floor level so the audience has a great connection with whoever is playing. You can stand or dance right in front of them.

Bands that developed at Nublu include Brazilian Girls, Forró in the Dark, Love Trio, and Wax Poetic. It’s a place where Norah Jones played a lot when she was coming up. DJ Moby used to spin there a lot. You never know what famous musician you might be rocking out next to at Nublu.

Wednesday nights used to be Brazilian nights.

Nublu is a nightclub, but it feels like a washing machine of creativity. Music, art, fashion, and poetry are all in this machine spinning around, mixing together, getting cleaned up.
