Passaic County is getting ready to paint the streets red and white. Known as the largest celebration of Peruvian heritage in the United States, the annual Peruvian Parade and Festival is returning to the streets of Passaic, Clifton, and Paterson to commemorate Peruvian Independence Day (Las Fiestas Patrias). This is Metro NYC’s biggest Peruvian celebration.
Every year, this massive event draws over 30,000 visitors and residents alike, turning the local streets into a vibrant sea of music, traditional dance, and world-renowned gastronomy.

What to Expect at the Celebration
The Peruvian Parade and Festival celebrate Peruvian Independence from Spain, which was declared on July 18, 1821.
The Grand Parade
The multi-city parade serves as the heartbeat of the weekend. Marching from Passaic, through Clifton, and concluding in Paterson, the route features dozens of vibrant floats, marching bands, and local dignitaries. Attendees will experience jaw-dropping performances of traditional folklore dances, including the elegant Marinera, the high-energy Huayno, and energetic Afro-Peruvian routines.
The Street Festival & Live Music
Once the parade concludes in Paterson, the party moves to the main festival grounds. A massive stage will feature live performances from top local and international artists playing everything from traditional rhythms to modern salsa and cumbia.
A Food Lover’s Paradise
Peru is globally celebrated as a culinary powerhouse, and the Paterson festival is the perfect place to sample it all. Dozens of local vendors and food trucks will be serving up authentic, mouth-watering staples, including:
Ceviche: Fresh fish cured in citrus juices and spiced with chili peppers.
Anticuchos: Perfectly seasoned, grilled beef-heart skewers—a traditional street food favorite.
Lomo Saltado: Stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and french fries.

A Tradition of Local Pride
The Paterson area is home to one of the dense Peruvian-American communities in the country, centered on Market Street with one section earning the official designation of “Peru Square.” The community boundaries are roughly Spruce St, McBride Ave, Cianci St, Ward St, and Oliver St.

Paterson, New Jersey was the birthplace of American industry. The nation’s first planned industrial city used the Great Falls of the Passaic River for power. The Falls are a beautiful place to visit, and very striking when frozen in winter. The city went into decline from the 1920s to the 1970s. In the 1980s, Peruvian Americans revived Paterson.
