Pete Rodríguez was born in The Bronx, on August 2, 1969 where he was exposed to the birth of hip hop. He was raised in Puerto Rico where he studied classical music. One of his classmates was jazz saxophonist David Sanchez. After Army service, he got into jazz.

His father was the Fania All-Star salsa singer Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez. His sister is salsa singer Cita Rodríguez. She does an amazing show of Graciela of Machito and His Afro-Cubans. Pete’s godfather was Johnny Pacheco, the Fania All-Stars bandleader. [We dance son Dominicano at Son de Keka in Pacheco was born, Los Pepines in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic on Sundays.] The entire family is super talented and Pete was mentored from childhood by salsa royalty.

He was mentored by his father, Johnny Pacheco and also Oscar Hernández of Spanish Harlem Orchestra who was a music director of “El Conde’s band. Rodríguez sang on Tito Puente’s Grammy-winner “Mambo Birdland,” and played percussion on Eddie Palmieri’s Grammy-winner “Simpatico.” He’s performed with many salsa and jazz legends.

Rodríguez has Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in jazz from Rutgers University. He did his PhD in Musical arts from University of Texas at Austin. So he’s also a great teacher.

His background in salsa, hip hop, bomba and plena in Puerto Rico, European classical music, and American jazz gives Rodríguez a unique musical perspective. His current sound is very straight-ahead jazz, but he’ll play whatever you want.
