Portugal Day Festival and Portugal Day Parade 2019

The Portugal Day Festival Newark is Saturday-Sunday, June 8-9, 2019. The Portugal Day Parade Newark is on Sunday, June 9 at 1pm.


Portugal Day

Portugal Day June 10 is Portugal’s National Day.

It commemorates the death of the great Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, the author of Portugal’s epic national poem Os Lusíadas.

We commemorate his death because nobody knows for sure when he was born. De Camões’ died in an important year in the history of Portugal. 1580 marked the end of Portugal as an independent nation until self rule was won back from Spain in 1640.

Newark is the Heart of NYC’s Portuguese Community

Portugal Day Newark is greater New York City’s big Portugal Day celebration.

It’s in the heart of greater New York City’s Portuguese community, the Ironbound District in Newark, New Jersey.

You can get there from Penn Station New York in 30-40 minutes by taking the NJT New Jersey Coast Line to Newark Penn and then a local bus.


Portugal Day Festival 2019

This year’s honorees:

  • Grand Marshall: Maria Coutinho of Coutinho’s Bakery
  • Man of the Year: basketball coach Anthony Tavares
  • Youth of the Year: Ana Catarina Monteiro

There are a whole series of events.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony is at Mediterranean Manor on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 7-12pm.

City Hall Flag Raising

Newark City Hall on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 1pm.

Portugal Day Mass

Newark Cathedral on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 8-9pm.

Portugal Day Festival

Clover Street, Newark

  • Saturday, June 8 from 11am – 12 midnight (shows start at 4pm)
  • Sunday, June 9 from 11am – 10pm

Portugal Day Parade

The Parade starts from Peter Francisco Park on Sunday, June 9 at 1pm.

Portugal Day 2018

Portugal Day in Newark, New Jersey is a weekend festival on Friday – Sunday, June 8 – 10, 2018. The festival is on Ferry Street in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood.

Portugal Day Parade

The Portugal Day Parade is on Sunday, June 10 at 3 pm.

Visiting Portugal Day Newark

The Festival is at Peter Francisco Park. It’s just across Market St from Newark Penn Station.

You can get there quickly and easily from Manhattan by taking the train from New York Penn Station. The ride takes about 15 minutes.

The big celebration in Metro New York is Portugal Day in Newark, New Jersey’s Ironbound community.

It’s a long weekend street party.
Friday June 9, 3 – 10 pm
Saturday, June 10, 1 pm – midnight
Sunday, June 11, Parade 2 pm, Party until 10 pm

You can get there in 30-40 minutes from Penn Station New York by taking the NJT New Jersey Coast Line to Newark Penn and then a local bus.

New York Portugal Day Parade

New York’s main celebration is a parade and street festival at Wilson Park in Mineola, Long Island. Mineola has a large Portuguese community.

You can get to Mineola from Penn Station on the Long Island Railroad Ronkonkoma line.
