Portugal Day
Portugal Day June 10 is Portugal’s National Day.
It commemorates the death of the great Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, the author of Portugal’s epic national poem Os Lusíadas.
We commemorate his death because nobody knows for sure when he was born. De Camões’ died in an important year in the history of Portugal. 1580 marked the end of Portugal as an independent nation until self rule was won back from Spain in 1640.
Newark is the Heart of NYC’s Portuguese Community
Portugal Day Newark is greater New York City’s big Portugal Day celebration.
It’s in the heart of greater New York City’s Portuguese community, the Ironbound District in Newark, New Jersey.
You can get there from Penn Station New York in 30-40 minutes by taking the NJT New Jersey Coast Line to Newark Penn and then a local bus.

The Festival is at Peter Francisco Park. It’s just across Market St from Newark Penn Station.
You can get there quickly and easily from Manhattan by taking the train from New York Penn Station. The ride takes about 15 minutes.

The big celebration in Metro New York is Portugal Day in Newark, New Jersey’s Ironbound community.
It’s a long weekend street party.

New York Portugal Day Parade
New York’s main celebration is a parade and street festival at Wilson Park in Mineola, Long Island. Mineola has a large Portuguese community.
