Public Theater Produces Great American Theatre

Public Theater NYC (Big Apple Stock/Dreamstime)
Public Theater NYC (Big Apple Stock/Dreamstime)

The Public Theater is an important Off-Broadway incubator for great American theatre. In addition to Free Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park in summer, The Public regularly produces award-winning theater at its Astor Place home. Some goes on to Broadway. Some goes on to film. Some productions like “Hair” (1960s), “A Chorus Line” (1970s), and “Hamilton” (2015) define the generations that produced them. Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater is an eclectic live music showcase.

Colombian American Theatre

“The Other Americans” is Emmy Award-winning, New York Colombian actor and comic John Leguizamo’s first formal play. The great character actor stars in this semi-autobiographical family drama about a Colombian American family moving on up in its American Dream in late 1990s Queens – in spite of racism, violence, mental illness, and machismo/marianismo, on top of the usual family challenges. It’s directed by Puerto Rican Tony Award-winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson at the Public Theater in NoHo, Manhattan; from September 11 – October 26, 2025. Extended to November 23. From $30. 🇨🇴

Leguizamo was raised in Queens. He has said that he developed his comic instinct to defend himself because he was the only Latino when and where he grew up. The story leans on Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” about a black family trying to build a better life in South Chicago. If you are a person of color (doesn’t matter what color), you’ll recognize parts of your own experience in this drama.
