About Rockefeller Center

The original art deco Rockefeller Center (1931-1939) is between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue from 48th St to 51st St in Midtown, Manhattan. To get there just tell your driver “Rockefeller Center.”

Later additions to Rockefeller Center include 75 Rockefeller Plaza across 51st St to the north and four buildings across Sixth Avenue which used to house many media companies.

The Atlas statue on Fifth Avenue is iconic. There is usually some incredible art in front of Christie’s. The Rockefeller Center Concourse is an interesting underground series of shops.

Rockefeller Plaza

Rockefeller Plaza in the very center is familiar for its rim of flags and the statue of Prometheus. He is the Greek Titan who gave fire to humankind. Prometheus represents the spirit of New York City. The Plaza is a bar in summer and an ice skating rink in winter.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree stands above the Plaza during the holidays. The Plaza gets very crowded during the holidays.

The Plaza’s iconic entrance is on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th St.

30 Rock, Top of the Rock and Bar SixtyFive

The main building is 30 Rockefeller Center. The “American Progress” mural in the lobby infamously replaced “Man at the Crossroads” by Diego Rivera.

Top of the Rock is a popular observation deck. It is right in the middle of Midtown’s skyscrapers.

The Rainbow Room is an elegant restaurant, but is only open to the public on special nights. Bar SixtyFive is a lovely alternative.
