Bartlett Sher’s 2016 production moves the story into the 1700s. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts. Nadine Sierra is an Italian Puerto Rican soprano.

“Roméo et Juliette”

The classic Shakespeare tragedy of star-crossed Italian lovers is the template for many stories of ill-fated young love. The story is set in Verona, Italy, a town in northern Italy on the road between Venice and Milan.

  • Romeo is a son of the house of Montague.
  • Juliette is a daughter of the house of Capulet.
  • Stéphano is Romeo’s page or assistant.
  • Mercutio is Romeo’s friend.
  • Frère Laurent is a Franciscan friar and Romeo’s confidant.

Charles Gounod

Charles Gounod (1818 – 1893) is best known for his version of Bach’s “Ave Maria” and his opera “Faust.”
