It took us a long time to discover the Signature Theatre. Actually they found us. It’s because there isn’t anything overtly Latin about the Company. However, they regularly produce award-winning theatre by Latin playwrights or with Latin themes.

The Signature Theatre is not just a theatre, it’s a theatre community.

“Not just a theatre, it’s a theatre community”

The Signature Theatre produces award-winning theatre. It was the first New York City theatre to win the Regional Theatre Tony Award. The Company has won:

  • 1 Tony Award
  • 1 Pulitzer Prize
  • 32 Audelco Awards
  • 34 Obie Awards
  • 24 Lucille Lortel Awards
  • 11 Drama Desk Awards
  • 10 Drama League Nominations
  •  5 Outer Critics Circle Awards
  • 1 Off Broadway Alliance Award

Signature Theatre residency programs give playwrights the freedom to create. That is no small thing.

Stephen Adly Guirgis

Guirgis is an Egyptian – Irish – American Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. A lot of his plays are based on his experience growing up in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Upper West Side didn’t used to be as nice as it is now.

His Between Riverside and Crazy won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His Motherfucker with the Hat earned six Tony Award nominations including “Best Play.”

Guirgis co-created, wrote and executive produced The Get Down, an excellent docu-drama on the origins of Hip-Hop with Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge).

His Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train ran during Signature Theatre’s 2017-2018 season. It is nominated for three 2018 Lucille Lortel Awards:

  • Outstanding Revival
  • Outstanding Lead Actor, Sean Carvajal
  • Outstanding Featured Actor, Edi Gathegi

Guirgis is currently bringing Our Lady of 121st St to the Signature Theatre.

Quiara Alegría Hudes

Hudes is a Tony Award-nominated American playwright and composer with a Jewish – Puerto Rican heritage. She wrote the book for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s  Tony Award-winning play In the Heights. For this, she was nominated for a Tony Award for “Best Book of a Musical.” Her play Water by the Spoonful won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The New Yorker is the Shapiro Distinguished Professor of Writing and Theater at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Dominique Morisseau

Morisseau is an award-winning Haitian – American actor and playwright. She earned a BFA in acting from the University of Michigan.

Morisseau is best known for her three-play series The Detroit Projects:

  1. Skeleton Crew (Atlantic Theater Company)
  2. Paradise Blue (Williamstown Theatre Festival)
  3. Detroit ’67 (Public Theater, Classical Theatre of Harlem, and National Black Theatre).

New Yorkers relate to the Haitian – American experience through Flatbush, Brooklyn. But this is Detroit.

Morisseau is currently bringing Paradise Blue to the Signature Theatre.
