New York City Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty
This is Peter Martins’ staging of the ballet after Petipa. Balanchine choreographed The Garland Dance for the 1981 Tschaikovsky Festival. It is now part of NYC Ballet’s presentation.
‘Sleeping Beauty’ is one of NYC Ballet’s most elaborate productions with over 100 dancers.
Classical ballet is not what New York City Ballet is best known for. But this version provides the traditional story, set design and costumes with the incredible agility of New York City Ballet dancers.
‘Sleeping Beauty’
The story is a classic European fairy tale about a beautiful princess who after eating a poison apple that puts her to sleep, can only be woken by the kiss of a real prince.
It’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ in English, ‘La Belle au bois dormant’ in French, and ‘Sole, Luna, e Talia’ in Italian, and ‘La belle durmiente’ in Spanish.
The earliest ‘Sleeping Beauty’ narrative is told in the anonymous French romance ‘Perceforest’ (circa 1330s) which is a series of foundation stories of the Arthurian legend.
Giambattista Basile retold the story as ‘Sole, Luna, e Talia’ (1697). The Brothers Grimm wrote down an oral version of the tale as ‘Little Briar Rose’ (1812).
Disney made it an animated film in 1959.
