Teresita Fernández is a Cuban-American artist known for large-scale experiential works that play with the way we see natural landscapes. The award-winning artist is represented in New York by Lehmann Maupin.

Fire (America)
The artist’s Fire (America) is an exhibition and installation at Lehmann Maupin Chrystie Street in the Lower East Side from March 17 – May 20, 2017.
She is showing a glazed ceramic mosaic of a brushfire that changes as you move across the tiles. It moves the way a real fire flickers and taunts you.
The exhibition includes a site-specific immersive installation made of solid charcoal applied to the gallery walls.
Fata Morgana
If you were in New York City from April 2015 to January 2016, you might remember Fernández’ Madison Square Park installation Fata Morgana. A Fata Morgana is a mirage.
The work was a puzzle-like layer of reflective cutouts hung over park walkways. The cutouts looked like trees condensed into a flat plane. They changed color depending on where you looked from, but cast natural-looking shadows. It was the first public art in Madison Square to fully utilize the park’s overhead space.
Fernández seemed to be playing with the question of what is real and what is synthetic. That’s a natural question in New York City parks where the illusion of nature is often entirely man-made.
Teresita Fernández
The artist lives and works in Brooklyn. She was born in Miami, Florida in 1968.
Her MFA is from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her BFA is from Florida International University.
Among other awards, Fernández is a MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow. She was the first Latina on the Federal government’s U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
Her work is in collections at the Museum of Modern Art New York, The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and many other prominent collections worldwide.
