Tom Zé was an intimate part of the Tropicália movement in 1968 Brazil with legends Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and others. They got famous, but Zé disappeared until David Byrne (Talking Heads) rediscovered Zé in the early 1990s for Byrne’s world music label Luaka Bop.
Zé takes Brazilian creativity to another level with unusual instrumentation, melodies, and timing. In that way he is the Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart of Bossa Nova. Safe as milk, his edge is softened by the smoothest Brazilian groove.
Zé is back at his antics, and it’s fun.
