Tyshawn Sorey (92nd Street Y)
Tyshawn Sorey (92nd Street Y)

Dr. Tyshawn Sorey is an award-winning American composer. The Pulitzer Prize-winning MacArthur Fellow is a really hot jazz percussionist and educator with something to say. He can say it in jazz. He can say it in classical. He’s a talking drum.

Tyshawn Sorey and Ian Rosenbaum of Sandbox Percussion discuss the Max Roach Centennial at the Library of Congress

Dr. Tyshawn Sorey Trio & Sandbox Percussion play “Cogitations,” their newly commissioned Max Roach Centennial tribute; at Kaufmann Concert Hall at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan’s Upper East Side; on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 6:30pm, both in-person and online. From $25. 92ny.org 🇺🇸

Max Roach was an American jazz drummer and composer who was one of the bebop pioneers at a magical time in New York City. He was a restless artist who constantly searched for new sources of inspiration, and new ways to express himself. He studied Haitian drum in Haiti, and composed for theatre, dance, and orchestra. He even played a hip hop concert for Fab Five Freddy. The language of jazz is universal, so a strong hand can take it anywhere. Considering Roach’s approach to music, you can’t help but see the score for Dr. Tyshawn Sorey.
