January 24, 2023 by New York Latin Culture Magazine

Celebrate World Puppetry Day (Marie Elena Sager/Dreamstime)

World Puppetry Day brings together all the puppeteers of Earth on March 21.

The day seeks to promote the traditions and the future of puppetry. It was started by UNIMA – Union Internationale de la Marionnette in 2003 at the suggestion of Iranian puppeteer Javad Zolfaghari. UNIMA is an NGO affiliated with UNESCO.

Teatro SEA, the Latino theatre for young audiences, is one of New York City’s leading puppeteers. They are presenting “The Colors of Frida,” about Mexican icon Frida Kahlo, on the @teatroseanyc Facebook page at 4pm. FREE

The other places we expect to find puppets in New York City include the giant puppets at El Museo del Barrio and puppet master Basil Twist’s Dream Music Puppetry at the HERE theater in Hudson Square. But we don’t see anything scheduled.
