Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is One of New York’s Busiest Latin Jazz Big Bands

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble keep the Latin big band format alive in New York City. The groups are directed by Cuban jazz legend Arturo O’Farrill, and are part of Belongó, formerly the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. The Orchestra is Arturo’s main musical project, but he doesn’t always perform with them in New York City. It’s a great band whether he is performing or not.

Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Arturo O’Farrill is Cuban and the Orchestra has the classic Cuban sound, but it is mixed with New York jazz influences. If you listen to the video, you’ll hear references to Machito and other Cuban artists. When the music drops into droning percussion, you feel the Cuban rumba. Then the band opens up again and we’re back on Broadway. It’s a spectacular mix.

Most Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra albums win or are nominated for Grammys for “Best Latin Jazz Album,” “Best Instrumental Composition,” and the like. The Orchestra is that good.
