Birdland is one of New York’s legendary jazz clubs. It was a place where jazz and latin got back together.
The original “Jazz Corner of the World” was named after bebop legend Charlie “Yardbird” Parker.
Over 20 years ago, Chico O’Farrill started Birdland’s Latin Sunday nights. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, directed by Chico’s son Arturo O’Farrill, carries on the tradition. 🇨🇺

About Birdland
Named after Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, the original “Jazz corner of the world” was one of the New York jazz clubs where jazz and Latin came back together.
The original Birdland opened on Broadway in 1949 with Charlie “Yardbird” Parker headlining. As the 52nd St jazz scene collapsed, the energy moved to Birdland and other clubs. Jazz legends played regularly until the original closed in 1965.
The club reopened uptown at Broadway and 105th in 1986. It moved to its current Hell’s Kitchen location in 1996. Jazz legends play regularly.
Sundays are Latin jazz night. Chico O’Farrill started the tradition in the 1990s with his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. Arturo O’Farrill carries on to this day with his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. It must be one of the longest standing gigs in jazz. Highly recommended.
