Birdland in Hell’s Kitchen is one of NYC’s grand old Jazz clubs. It’s original location on Broadway and 52nd was one of the places where Latin and Jazz mixed together.
Birdland and Yardbird
The club takes its name from Charlie “Yardbird” Parker. The original club opened in 1949 when Jazz was still king. It was a place where all the top Jazz artists played and celebrities came to see them.
The club was just down the street from the Palladium Ballroom which was the home of Machito, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodriguez. Jazz musicians would go to the Palladium to hear the Latin players. Latin artists would go to the Jazz clubs on 52nd Street. It’s part of how Latin Jazz was born.
