About the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine
A “cathedral” is a church that is also the seat of a bishop.
The cathedral has been under construction since 1892. It remains unfinished. The building is physically imposing. It is so big. When you enter, it feels like you are in a sacred grotto, just New York size.
This is great hall for spiritual music. Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin and many other legendary artists have performed here.
Many famous New Yorkers have been memorialized here including modern dance legend Alvin Ailey (1989) and jazz legend Duke Ellington (1974).
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a service in 1956. The Dalai Lama first visited in 1979. Archbishop Desmond Tutu spoke in 1986. Nelson Mandela spoke in 1997.
Jazz, world music and earth music legend Paul Winter is an artist in residence. His winter solstice and summer solstice celebrations are wonderful times to visit the cathedral.
French artist in residence Philippe Petit, who famously walked a high wire between the Twin Towers, walked between the cathedral’s two towers in 1982.
