Garifuna
Experience Garifuna NYC at the Central American Independence Parade, Wabafu Garifuna Dance Theater, Bronx Music Hall, and more. Garifuna are a resilient community with an amazing heritage that blends Arawak (Taíno) and Carib (Kalinago) languages with African Diasporic traditions. Their language is Arawak, but their culture is African Diasporic. Garifuna language reflects the human migration pattern of invading men taking local wives. Men’s vocabulary is more Carib. Women’s vocabulary is more Taíno. Their culture survived colonization and exile from Saint Vincent to Honduras where they created the Honduran national dance: punta. The Bronx has the largest Garifuna community outside of Central America.
