Ismael Fernández, Spanish Flamenco

Ismael Fernández sings Spanish flamenco for the World Music Institute at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in NoHo, Manhattan on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 7pm. $30

This show is part of the Flamenco Festival New York 2019

Ismael Fernández

Fernández was born in Seville, Spain, the capital of flamenco country. He is a member of the renowned flamenco family “La Familia Fernández.” He regularly performs with them at the Seville Flamenco Biennial.

Fernández rose to prominence when he won the National Flamenco Contest of Cordoba in 2004. Since then he has worked with many renowned flamenco artists on the world’s great stages including New York City Center, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), Sadler Wells (London) and Teatro Real (Madrid).

The Washington Post called him the “most charismatic performer” and a “connection to the Gypsy source.”

Based in New York City, Fernández is married to flamenco dancer Sonia Olla. She famously did flamenco choreography for Madonna. Sonia and Ismael have created many shows together including ‘Tablao Sevilla,’ ‘Entretiempo,’ ‘Tiempo Al Aire’ and ‘Por los Caminos.’

The Sonia Olla & Ismael Fernández flamenco company is one of New York City’s strong flamenco companies.

‘Trato’

A “trato” is a deal. The album was produced with flamenco great Chano Dominguez (who performs at Joe’s Pub the next day).

The deal is that you will be filled with “intense emotion, soulful singing and rhythm that plays in your heart long after the show is over” (World Music Institute).
