JUNE
Juneteenth: The Musical in Concert by Darrel Alejandro Holnes 🇺🇸 🇲🇽
A love story set in the real history of Juneteenth ~ National Independence Day.
Juneteenth, Fri, June 19, 9:30pm
$36
A formerly enslaved man who escaped to become a Union soldier returns to Texas to marry the woman he left behind. But her former master refuses to let her go ~ even though the war and slavery are over. Black soldiers and Mexican allies unite to make freedom a reality.
This kind of thing actually happened. Mexico was free long before the United States, and provided a safe haven for Black Americans. Many prospered in their new lives. Mexico also has its own Black history through Veracruz, Mexico’s Caribbean gateway city. La Bamba, the classic Mexican wedding song, refers to the Mbamba people of old Kongo in Central Africa.

New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay called out Soledad Barrio “as one of today’s great dancers of any genre” in 2011. That was a long time ago for a dancer. Barrio’s mission has changed from pursuing the duende (flamenco spirit) to training the next generation of flamenco dancers. I think that is what Agua Fresca (fresh water) is all about. She is renewing the duende. In the classical arts, to become a master, you have to train with one. Any student of Soledad Barrio is worth watching.
