Jordi Savall ~ a living legend of early Western music

Jordi Savall is a Catalan, Spanish early music conductor, viol player and composer. He is one of the world’s leading figures in medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. Savall popularized the viol da gamba, a Spanish Renaissance viol that is played between the legs like a cello.

Jordi Savall is a living legend of early Western music


Savall was born in Igualada, Catalonia, Spain, a town outside Barcelona, on August 1, 1941. His music career began in the town choir. Savall studied under viol de gamba master August Wenzinger at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and succeeded him as professor of viola da gamba in 1974.

Savall formed early music ensemble Hespèrion XXI in 1974. He has recorded over 100 albums and now runs his own label Alia Vox.
