Lincoln Square
Lincoln Square is the Upper West Side district anchored by Lincoln Center, running roughly from Columbus Circle at 58th Street north to 70th Street, bordered by Central Park to the east and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. The neighborhood was built on the site of San Juan Hill, a vibrant historically Black and Puerto Rican community displaced during the mid-century Lincoln Square Renewal Project that created the performing arts campus. “West Side Story” is that story.
Today the district holds the full Lincoln Center complex, including the Metropolitan Opera House, David Geffen Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the David H. Koch Theater, David Rubenstein Atrium, and the Juilliard School, alongside Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus. Columbus Circle sits at the neighborhood’s southern edge, along with the Deutsche Bank Center’s shops and restaurants. Richard Tucker Park and Dante Park provide the neighborhood’s green space and host a summer concert series and Greenmarket.
