West Village, New York City (Travnikovstudio/Dreamstime)

Manhattan’s West Village is a quiet, residential neighborhood with a strong LGBTQ+ community. It’s most beautiful when the Callery pear trees bloom with white flowers in late March or early April.

Hudson River Park runs along the river. The IFC Center movie theater is where the Rocky Horror Picture Show became a pop culture phenomena in 1975. The Village Vanguard is NYC’s oldest operating Jazz club.

The chic Meatpacking District is a sub-neighborhood.

Things to Do in the West Village

The West Side Piers Were Once an LGBTQ Refuge

The Stonewall Inn is where the Stonewall Riots of 1969 energized the LGBTQ movement. Christopher St is one of New York City’s main LGBTQ streets. Christopher Park has the Stonewall National Monument and the famous Gay Liberation Monument sculpture by George Segal.

One of the reasons the West Village and Chelsea became LGBTQ neighborhoods is that back in the day, coming out often meant getting thrown out of the house. Many LGBTQ youth sought refuge in the abandoned West Side Piers. As people found their footing, they settled in nearby.

It’s all cleaned up now. Hudson River Park is beautiful.

The West Village Feels Like a Small Town

It is a really beautiful neighborhood of small, quiet, tree-lined streets. The small white flowers of Callery Pear trees brighten the streets in late March.

West Village Parks

Christopher Park is the home of the Stonewall National Monument.

Hudson River Park is the main park. There is a lovely promenade for walking and biking, sports and dining along the rebuilt waterfront from Tribeca to Hell’s Kitchen.
