Oscar Nominations for African, Indigenous, Italian & Mexican movies

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA, January 22, 2019 ~ Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends, Black-ish) announced Oscar nominations from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

This year’s crop of nominees reflected changes in the viewing habits of Americans of the U.S.

Roma was big news for Netflix. It was the first Netflix film to earn an Oscar nomination. Not very long ago, streaming films weren’t even allowed in the competition.

The Best Actress nomination for Roma star Yalitza Aparicio is a big win for our Indigenous community. The first-time actress is from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca. She is Mixtec and Triqui and just finished training to be a school teacher.

Cuarón cast her because she has the same quiet openness as Libo, his childhood nanny who was the movie’s inspiration. You can see this in the film. Aparicio is quiet, but allows you in. As catastrophe after catastrophe unfolds, the actress speaks volumes just by the stoic look on her face. She is the fourth Latin American to be nominated for Best Actress after Fernanda Montenegra (Central Station, 1998), Salma Hayek (Frida, 2002) and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace, 2004).

Marina de Tavira’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress is important too. She joins Katy Jurado, Rita Moreno, Norma Aleandro, Adriana Barraza, Berenice Bejo and Lupita Nyong’o as Latinas nominated in the category.

Black Panther became the first superhero film to earn a Best Picture nomination. It was also 2018’s biggest moneymaker. Yes, we have superheroes too. Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman earned well deserved nominations. In the Best Documentary category, Hale County This Morning, This Evening by RaMell Ross was nominated.

Mother by Spaniard Rodrigo Sorogoyen was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.

We are making progress, slowly, but surely.

Roma and The Favourite led with 10 nominations each.
