Latin parade traditions come from military parades, Carnival, and the patron saint celebrations that take place every year in towns across the Latin world.

Parades and the festivals that accompany them bring the community together. Politicians get a chance to show off. Families share cultural traditions with the children. Everybody has a great time. Some towns prepare all year long.

Big city parades are great, but they don’t have the intensity that you’ll find in a small town. The best way to experience one of these from New York is to fly down to Puerto Rico and go to one of the Fiestas Patronales (Patron Saint Festivals). There are two or three of them every weekend on the island, all year long.

If you like to dance, you can dance to legendary salsa, merengue, bomba, plena, calypso and reggaeton bands for free. Even if you don’t like to dance, seeing the way regular people dance is amazing.

Visiting a patron saint festival in a small Latin town is something you should do once in your life. The joy is infectious and you will never forget the experience.
