The 2021 Premio Lo Nuestro Latin music awards, were live on Univision from Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 7pm ET.

Awards Show Performers

It’s great to see who is nominated and who wins, but the real show is the awards ceremony itself. It’s a night of the biggest stars in Latin music.

Yuri 🇲🇽 hosted and a grand opening tribute to Mexican Mayan composer Armando Manzanero 🇲🇽 (1935-2020). Manzanero was one of the great Latin songwriters. He’s a Latin Grammy and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award winner. Lila Downs 🇲🇽, Alejandra Guzmán 🇲🇽 and Arthur Hanlon 🇺🇸 sang his tribute. Hanlon’s a gringo who makes great Latin music. It’s cool when someone from one culture truly understands and participates in another culture.

Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance and thanked the artists for bringing OUR country together. We love you so much Kamala because you represent us.

Everybody seems to love Maluma 🇨🇴 baby. He sang a medley of songs off his new album #7DJ (Seven days in Jamaica).

Marc Anthony honored Fania Records co-founder Johnny Pacheco (1935-2021) who really made the salsa dura sound in the 1970s.

Natti Nattasha 🇩🇴 raised eyebrows in a different way than usual by showing off her baby bump. Congratulations Natti and Daddy Raphy Pina.

Gloria Trevi 🇲🇽 received the Premio a la Trayectoria Award for the 30th anniversary of her hit album “Tu Angel de la Guarda” (1991) and the hit “Pelo Suelto.” Los Ángeles Azules 🇲🇽, Kinky 🇲🇽 and Chiquis 🇲🇽 join her tribute. Has it been 30 years since that song? We must be getting old.

Wisin 🇵🇷 was joined by a bunch of guest artists including Jhay Cortez 🇵🇷, Rauw Alejandro 🇵🇷, Zion & Lennox 🇵🇷 and Carlos Vives 🇨🇴.

Anuel AA and Ozuna closed the show with a performance that finally brought everyone in the arena to their feet. ¡Bravo!

Premio Lo Nuestro 2021 Winners

This is some of the best in Latin music of the last year.

New York and Miami are very Caribbean, but the most popular Latin music in the United States is Regional Mexican. It’s called “Regional” because Mexico is a big and diverse country with many distinct local styles, yet they are all son Méxicano (the Mexican sound).

The Latin Grammys are out of Miami. Univision is out of New York, but it started in Texas. So there’s a distinction between the two.
