Religious Holidays
Religious holidays in New York’s Latin communities rarely belong to just one tradition. A Catholic feast day for the Virgen del Carmen is also Mamacha Carmen to Peruvian devotees and, for some in the Haitian diaspora, a day tied to Erzulie Dantò. This subcategory covers the feast days, processions, and observances where Catholic, Indigenous, and African diasporic spiritual traditions meet, layer, and coexist across NYC’s Latin, African, and Indigenous communities.
